I. Project Summary
Deployed an Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) environment on Windows Server 2022 to establish a unified identity perimeter. Automated user lifecycle provisioning and department-based access control via PowerShell, enforced endpoint hardening via Group Policy Objects (GPOs), and integrated a Wazuh agent to monitor server and hosts telemetry.
II. Key Engineering Decisions
1. Automated Account and Identity Provisioning (PowerShell)
- Provisioned new user accounts automatically using a PowerShell script that also set a baseline security group based on the user's department. This enhances efficiency on time-consuming tasks such as adding multiple users to the domain.
Automated User Creation Script
2. Established Baseline Security Policy (Group Policy Object)
- Defined baseline domain policies such as increasing minimum password characters, disabled local Administrator account, and enabled PowerShell Script Block logging.
Established Baseline Security Policy
3. Endpoint Telemetry Monitoring (Sysmon & Wazuh Agent)
- Established centralized telemetry collection using Wazuh agent, Sysmon, and PowerShell Script Block Logging. This gives better visibility on Domain Controller events
Centralized Endpoint Monitoring
III. Challenges
| Challenges | Probable Cause | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Host can't find the domain controller | ~ Lab router DHCP is leasing network configuration to the host first |
~ Configured the domain controller as the only DHCP server. Turned off DHCP service on the Lab Router |
| Host DNS server was not assigned to the domain controller | ~ Previous network configuration is not being released | ~ Used ipconfig /renew~ Forgot password and reconnected to the network ~ Disabled and re-enabled host's network adapter |
IV. Validation and Testing
The table below shows that all the changes from the automated script, GPO creation, and Wazuh agent deployment are working as expected.
| Test | Description | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | User provisioning | Passed |
| Security-group assignment | Passed | |
| Home directory assignment | Passed | |
| Group Policy Object | Minimum password length 12* | Passed |
| Enable script block logging | Passed | |
Disable local Administrator account* |
Passed | |
| Wazuh Agent | Aggregated Sysmon logs | Passed |
| Aggregated PowerShell script block logs | Passed |
Testing
V. Lessons Learned
- DNS plays a crucial role for Active Directory setups.
- Active Directory gives centralized management of networks and hosts, enhance security, and user and resource administration.
VI. Next Steps
- Deploy ITSM and solve simulated IT tickets.
- Perform simulated attacks on the server, investigate, and harden.
